In early August 2026, Google officially confirmed to Skift that it is running a limited test of an AI-powered hotel booking feature directly within Google Search, marking a transition from a technological concept to a live product with real user traffic. Although the test is currently limited to the US, it is a signal that hoteliers should monitor closely, as the way Google reshapes the search and booking journey rarely stops at a single market. Hotel Link summarizes the published details of this feature and what hoteliers should prepare starting today.
According to Google's confirmation to Skift on August 7, 2026, the AI-based hotel booking feature, termed agentic booking, is currently active within Google Search's AI Mode for a small segment of US user traffic. This realizes the plan Google tentatively announced in November of last year regarding automated AI tools for flight and hotel bookings.
During an earnings call the same week, Glenn Fogel, CEO of Booking Holdings, confirmed that a small percentage of Google traffic is being exposed to this agentic booking experience, with Booking being one of the initial participating partners. This detail is significant as it demonstrates that the test is running on live user traffic, rather than just an internal demo.
Unlike static hotel search tools of the past, where Google merely displayed pricing tables and outbound links, agentic booking allows users to describe their needs in natural language, including stay dates, budget, location, and desired amenities. The AI then compares suitable options and guides the user toward completing the reservation with a specific partner, rather than forcing them to search manually from scratch.
What makes this feature possible is a new protocol from Google called the Universal Commerce Protocol, which allows AI agents to execute transactions directly within the conversation interface rather than redirecting users to an external website to complete payment. According to Skift, Amadeus described itself as one of the earliest hospitality infrastructure partners for this protocol, while Sabre executives noted that while Google excels at search and comparison, it still requires partners to fulfill and service the booking afterward.
The publicly disclosed partner list to date includes both major OTAs and global hotel groups:
Depending on user choice, the path to booking completion can route through the hotel brand's direct channel or an intermediary OTA. Notably, Wyndham has also been recorded connecting its rate and inventory data directly with Anthropic's Claude and launching a custom application on ChatGPT, showing that this trend is not confined to a single AI platform.
The IHG case is another noteworthy detail. In its H1 2026 financial report released on August 11, IHG confirmed that:
This serves as concrete proof that whether a hotel is recognized as a direct channel within the AI booking flow depends largely on whether its technology infrastructure is ready to connect.
To picture a concrete real-world scenario: a user types into AI Mode requesting a 4-star hotel near the city center with a pool, free cancellation up to 24 hours prior, and a budget around $130 per night. Instead of returning a list of links for the user to filter manually, AI Mode processes the entire query, checks real-time availability, and presents a few optimal choices, leaving the user to simply confirm the final payment step.
Google emphasizes that it has no intention of becoming an OTA. Nevertheless, as the underlying payment and transaction infrastructure is built out deeply, Google's positioning statements and the operational reality of the product do not necessarily overlap completely.
Over the past year, most hotel industry discussions regarding AI centered around how to get mentioned or recommended by AI tools like ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews, similar to traditional search engine optimization. With agentic booking, the game has advanced a step further: AI no longer just recommends; it can directly complete transactions within the same conversation.
This distinction is critical because it changes when a hotel gets the chance to interact directly with the guest. If an AI agent selects and books a room on behalf of a guest, that guest might arrive at check-in with virtually zero prior direct interaction with the hotel brand, raising new questions about who truly owns the customer relationship throughout the journey.
Despite official confirmation, several operational details of this feature have yet to be fully disclosed by Google:
Another point of attention for the hotel industry is loyalty programs and points. A stay at a Marriott-branded property booked through an OTA partner inside the AI flow may not grant full membership benefits compared to booking directly through official brand channels.
Since this test is currently limited to the US, most hotels do not need to react hastily. However, four areas are worth preparing early, as Google's search and booking technology trends typically roll out to other markets following a testing phase:

With technology shifting so rapidly, the most important task for a hotel is not chasing every new feature from Google, but rather solidifying its own data and operational foundation to adapt to any emerging distribution channel, whether guests arrive via traditional search or a future AI agent. Specifically, using a management toolkit like Hotel Link, hoteliers can start with four key actions:
Google's official testing of AI hotel bookings within Search represents a major milestone, proving that agentic technology is moving from concept to actual product faster than many anticipated. While the test remains limited to the US and many operational specifics are still unclear, this is an ideal time for hoteliers to audit their data quality, direct booking channels, and online reputation, rather than waiting until the trend becomes mainstream. If your hotel seeks support in standardizing data and operations to prepare for upcoming technological shifts, the Hotel Link team is ready to help you build a solid foundation. Contact us today!
